About Us
At Raccoon Forks Farms, we raise produce; seedlings; lamb, mutton, goat meat, and chickens; and beautiful brown eggs. We also make soap!
Practicing chemical-free, sustainable farming, we produce delicious local food. We sell our products through our CSA shares, on-line orders, at the Perry, Iowa farmers' market, and to a number of local groceries, coops, restaurants, and caterers.
As a microbusiness of Optimae LifeServices, Raccoon Forks Farms provides job opportunities to people with disabilities and mental illness. Employees at the Farms receive one-on-one job coaching and the support they need to build skills and be successful on the job.
OUR ANIMALS
We believe sunshine, grass beneath their feet, and the ability to forage keep our livestock happy and healthy. In return, they give us rich, delicious brown eggs and the best-tasting meat! During the day, our chickens roam at will in large pastures; at night, they choose their own roosting spots inside barns and sheds, where they are protected from predators. They have lots of space, inside and out, and are always cage-free! In addition to whatever they forage, to ensure proper nutrition, our chickens are also offered a vegetarian supplemental diet. Our goats and sheep are also pastured and they have access to shelters they can use as they please.
SUSTAINABILITY
We take pride in farming sustainably. We don't use any chemicals at the Farms, and antibiotics are used only if an animal is ill (and are administered only to that animal). We improve our soil's health and fertility with cover crops, as little tilling as possible, and our own Farms-produced compost. We reuse, recycle, and compost just about everything!
